Apr 3, 1. Messages: 1, I'm toying with the idea of getting a recent R8, and am wondering about the pickups. What can you tell me about the Custom Buckers? Apr 3, 2. Messages: 7, Just another flavor of PAF. I'm pretty sure the only significant difference between Custom Buckers and Burstbuckers is the magnet. Apr 3, 3. Most have AlNiCo 3, which gives them low output and healthy highs and mids. They are not muddy humbuckers. Give them an honest try before replacing them.

I see a lot of people pulling and flipping them for aftermarket pups. I own 3 sets. They're really very good IMO. I find even the low output PAFs can venture into heavier music very well.

They're probably hot enough if you can turn the Gain up slightly or hit the input harder clean boost. Of the humbuckers I currently own, they are my favorites.

The new Custom also shipped with a different case from the Standard, using a black and gold case instead of the brown and pink case that was the top-of-the-line case for the Les Paul Standard models.

However, in a telephone interview, JP Moats stated that, "On occasion, supply issues with the black and gold cases, would necessitate the use of Gibson's top-of-the-line case, so as to be able to fill orders; though it was rare". Bythe new Nashville bridge began to replace the ABR Inthe "pancake" maple layer was subtracted from the body, though the top was still maple, as was the neck.

It was around this time that the current serial number system appears as well. InGibson began making a number of Customs with maple fingerboards, instead of the typical ebony, which was discontinued by the early s. Inthe volute was phased out. InGibson closed the Kalamazoo plant, and all production was moved to Nashville.

InNorlin sold Gibson to a group of investors led by Henry Juszkiewicz. Les Paul Custom guitars from — were specially made to the requirements of the client, as regards fretboard, neck and body woods, and type of hardware, with some models allowing for requests for specific numbers of turns in the pickups' coils, as well.

Individual logo designs and hard cases were also manufactured at the request of the customer. The first two numbers represent on which number this specific model was built, next two represent the year they were made in and the last numeric value represents the month of formation.

The specs remained similar, with the only immediate changes being a TKL-made Custom Shop case black with a crushed red interior and a Certificate of Authenticity, as well as a Gibson Custom decal on the back of the headstock.
